NUR 674 Professional Portfolio
Personal Mission Statement / Goals
Nursing professionals and leaders work in diverse health care settings, allowing them to handle different roles, including direct patient care, policymaking, patient advocacy, and leadership/management. Effective implementation of these roles requires nurses to work in settings where their values and those of the organization align. This alignment fosters a collaborative practice and ensures a working culture where all team members are inspired to accomplish the same goals that benefit patients (Aronson, 2024). As a growing nursing professional and leader, I always look forward to implementing interventions that address patient needs comprehensively in care environments that are committed to high-quality care, excellence in all dimensions, and progressive improvement.
Personal ethics and values that guide my daily practice include dedication to compassionate care, professional integrity, respecting human dignity, teamwork, and a general practice that adheres to the Code of Ethics for nurses. These ethics and values align with the mission and vision of the health care organization where I intend to work since their application ensures nursing care that responds to patient needs, guarantees patient satisfaction, and fosters excellence in a culture that values continuous improvement in care quality, safety, and other fundamental elements. In the present practicum site (BronxCare Health System), the organization’s mission is to deliver high-quality, accessible care that responds to community needs in a caring environment that prioritizes patient safety and satisfaction (BronxCare Health System, 2025). My ethics and values align with this mission due to their centeredness in addressing patient needs, a goal that is accomplished through compassionate care, integrity, and teamwork.
The organization’s vision is to continually reinforce its leadership role toward accomplishing health excellence and equity. My ethics and values align with this vision since the central focus is excellence, which ensures high-quality care through innovation, positive change, continuous learning, and evidence-based solutions. This value congruence will be crucial in other workplaces apart from the BronxCare Health System. As Dunning et al. (2021) cited, value congruence enhances job satisfaction, prevents workplace conflicts, and is a critical component of healthy interprofessional relationships that improve patients’ health and well-being. It is the spine of a cohesive work culture that sustains high performance and health care excellence.
Professional Goals
- Improve technological skills and competencies
- Develop and enhance critical thinking and communication skills
- Be more proficient in advocacy
- Advance leadership and change management skills
Plans to Achieve the Goals
Nursing is an evolving profession, underlining the need for staff and leaders to update their skills, values, and perspectives. My professional goals align with the increasing demand for a competent, adaptive workforce that can effectively respond to dynamic patient care and workplace demands. One way of achieving these goals is continuous professional development (CPD) by advancing education, research, and attending conferences and seminars. CPD is pivotal in nurses’ lifelong learning and ensures their knowledge and skills are up-to-date as the changing workplace demands oblige (Mlambo et al., 2021). The second strategy for achieving these professional looks is seeking mentorship. Mentors are more experienced health care professionals who can guide nurses in decision-making regarding leadership, well-being, career advancement, and other areas. The third strategy is participating more in advocacy for patients and nurses. Effective participation requires a commitment to addressing issues affecting patients and nurses, protecting their rights, speaking up for them, and supporting them with resources, information, and other needs..
