WRTING THE DISCIPLINE PAPER (use the PROBLEM/SOLUTION PAPER FORMAT)
Be sure to use Headings for each of the sections for this paper.
Consider each Heading a separate essay within the whole paper. The following outline provides a breakdown of what should be in the paper:
The Situation (Use this Heading in your paper)
First paragraph
1. Hook the reader with the first sentence.
2. State the controversy or problem. Why is this a problem?
3. What is your dominant reaction to the problem?
Second paragraph
1. Clearly define terms for the reader.
2. Focus your definitions on how the term will be used in your paper. You may start with a general definition, but you should lead the reader into a very specific definition relating to your overall topic.
3. Use research to help you define the term.
Third paragraph
1. Provide history or background on the topic.
2. Focus on providing the reader with a clear explanation of the historical significance of the topic. Situate the topic in terms of how you will address the issue in the paper.
3. Use research to assist with the background information.
Fourth paragraph
1. Focus on the CAUSES.
2. What is the cause of your Discipline specific problem?
3. Use research to assist with the Causes.
4. Write a concluding sentence for the paragraph.
Fifth paragraph
1. Focus on the EFFECTS.
2. What were the consequences or what happened as a result your Discipline specific problem?
3. Use research to assist with the Effects.
4. Write a concluding sentence for the paragraph.
THE PROBLEM (Use this Heading in your paper)
[What are the problems associated with the topic? Base this on your research.]
First paragraph

2. Support: Use clear logic and thinking to support the topic sentence. Use examples from the videos, articles, and your research to the topic sentence. Use MLA to document borrowed information.
3. Write a concluding sentence for the paragraph.
Third paragraph
1. Summarize your reaction.
2. Restate your position.
3. Transition to solution section

A. How do you suggest this problem be solved? What recommendations would you suggest be put in place to end the problem. Explain in detail.
B. What do you think will happen if nothing is done to solve the problem? Explain in detail.
Topic Scope: Keep the above essay length recommendation in mind as you focus on the topic and draft the paper. (Tips: If you can’t achieve at least 5 typed/word processed & double-spaced pages, you need to either provide more specific development of your topic sentences, or expand the scope of your topic. On the other hand, if you have reached page 5 in drafting your essay and you still have much more you want to write to make your thesis point, you need to narrow down the scope of your topic.)
