Camille Nunez
One paradigm that has maintained true after the 1930’s is that women could become successful in higher education more than just finishing and vocational schools. Thanks to the collaborative efforts of social reformers such as Grace and Edith Abbott, Alice Hamilton, Julia Lathrop and Florence Kelly, the paradigm shift significantly changed the outlook of women in higher education and in the work force. Nursing, teaching, social work and home economics were common subjects that women were able to study instead of traditional “feminine courses” (Carter, 1986). Women of color, Jewish and middle-class women began to find more opportunities in community colleges, universities and in the work place as the years progressed. This has allowed girls to see their future open to whatever they would like to be or study. This was previously unthinkable for girls until the change in the way people viewed higher education and the role of women in the workforce.
