Once you choose the story or poem (I chose where are you going where have you been Joyce Carol Oates-) , the next step is to find one source for each of the following critical theory approaches– biographical information about the author, historical relevance to the time period in which the story or poem is set or when it was written, a social issue relevant to the short story or poem, and a work of literary criticism (that evaluates or interprets a literary work. Library databases are the best place to find literary criticism).
After you find your sources, you are going to write an annotated bibliography. The first part of an annotated bibliography entry is the publication information (the work cited entry information). This should be in the same format as a works cited entry including the hanging indention.
Next, you will write the annotation of the article, which is a paragraph that includes a seven to ten sentence summary of the article (in third person point of view), a one-sentence critique of the article (third person point of view), and a one-to-two sentence evaluation of the work’s usefulness to your research essay.
(The first line of the paragraph must be indented one-half inch).
The publication information (works cited entry information) for each article must be in alphabetical order by the author’s last name or the first word in the title of the article unless the article begins with a, an, or the. If the article begins with one of those three words, then you alphabetize by the second word in the title. Remember that the annotated bibliography must be double spaces, and you must write complete sentences.
